Critical Care

Steven G. Kernie, MD
Director, Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine

When a child requires intensive care, it is a trying time for everyone in the family. The critical care medicine specialists at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital recognize this, and not only provide advanced lifesaving care to children in need, but support for parents and other family members during this challenging time.

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital features 41 beds in a state-of-the-art unit. The Pediatric Critical Care Division, established in 1999, oversees a large general medical-surgical Pediatric ICU as well as a special 14-bed Pediatric Cardiovascular ICU. The units feature family-friendly glass-enclosed cubicles, which offer privacy and isolation so a child can recover as comfortably as possible aided by the latest technology available.

We have special expertise caring for:

  • Critically ill children with medical illnesses such as asthma, seizures, meningitis, and encephalitis.
  • Children who need intensive care after surgery, including those who had operations for complex congenital heart disease, organ transplantation, neurological diseases, and ENT, orthopedic, and ophthalmological problems. These patients make up more than half of our admissions.
  • Children who have suffered from trauma, including those with head trauma and multi-organ trauma.
24/7 Patient Transfers

NYP STAT, a full-time transport system, is available to bring patients to the Pediatric ICU from our network hospitals, other hospitals within the Tri-State area, and beyond. Physicians who wish to transfer a sick child from another hospital to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital need only call one convenient number, 1-800-NYP-STAT (1-800-697-7828), to reach the Transfer Center. They'll be greeted by a critical care nurse, who will put them in touch with an accepting physician, ensure a clean ready bed, and facilitate transportation arrangements if necessary. This transfer service is available to referring physicians 24/7. The transport system is covered by trained paramedics and pediatric critical care fellows when needed.
