Infectious Diseases
Anne A. Gershon, MD
Director, Division of Infectious DiseasesThe treatment of young patients with infectious diseases requires a team approach, one that integrates the latest medical advances with compassion and care. The team of infectious disease specialists at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is highly experienced in the management of infants, children, and adolescents with a wide spectrum of acute and chronic bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections.
Our dedicated physicians provide diagnostic and treatment consultations throughout the hospital, including neonatology, oncology, transplantation, medicine, and pulmonology, as well as throughout the community. In addition, our specialists are advancing the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases by participating in numerous clinical research projects, such as the development of new antiviral and antibiotic therapies and vaccines for children.
The members of the Division of Infectious Diseases are internationally renowned as leaders in the management of:
- infections due to the varicella-zoster virus (which causes chicken pox and shingles)
- complicated bacterial infections
- HIV/AIDS
- infections in immunocompromised children, such as those with cancer and organ transplants
- endocarditis (an infection of the inner heart lining)
- tuberculosis
- osteomyelitis (a bone infection)
- pneumonia
- congenital or neonatal (newborn) viral infections
In addition, they are skilled in treating patients with challenging infections that are resistant to multiple drugs.
Our infectious disease specialists serve as consultants for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and the National Institutes of Health. National organizations such as the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, as well as pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, also regularly seek our expertise.
