Vascular Anomalies Group
The Multidisciplinary Vascular Anomalies Group at Columbia University Medical Center / Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian was founded more than a decade ago by Maria C. Garzon, MD, Pediatric Dermatology, and Jessica J. Kandel, MD, Pediatric Surgery, This multispecialty group provides specialized expertise in the treatment of vascular tumors of infancy and childhood. These lesions include infantile hemangiomas, lymphatic and venous malformations, ateriovenous malformations, and more rare types of vascular anomalies ( such as Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma, tufted angioma, and those associated with genetic conditions).
Because these conditions frequently require input from many specialty services, our multidisciplinary team includes physicians and nurses from:
- Pediatric Cardiology
- Pediatric Dermatology
- Pediatric Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology
- Pediatric Genetics
- Pediatric Hematology/Oncology
- Interventional Neuroradiology
- Ophthalmology and Oculoplastic Surgery
- Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery
- Pediatric Otolaryngology
- Pediatric Surgery
- Pediatric Plastic Surgery/Craniofacial Surgery
The Vascular Anomalies Group evaluates and manages pediatric and adolescent patients with these complex conditions, providing interdisciplinary care both to inpatients and through their monthly Vascular Anomalies Clinic.
The Vascular Anomalies Clinic fosters collaboration among specialists involved in the care of children with complex vascular anomalies, enabling coordinated care that can assist families as they seek to understand and manage these challenging conditions.
As a result, Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital has become a referral site for neonates with complex vascular anomalies. In addition, referrals often come from other dermatologists, pediatricians, and surgeons who treat these children in outside clinics and recognize the need for specialty evaluation and an interdisciplinary approach in managing their care.
