Carmen and John Thain Center for Prenatal Pediatrics
As a leading center in the management of high-risk pregnancies, the Center for Prenatal Pediatrics provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for women in pregnancies identified with a fetal anomaly. The Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is one of few such comprehensive fetal programs worldwide.
The face of the Center is represented by a core group of employees who truly understand and empathize with what it means to suddenly be recategorized from a low-risk to high-risk pregnancy. The collaborative and coordinated care provided by the Center has enabled families to obtain the most up-to-date information on prognosis, treatment, and outcomes with a multidisciplinary approach. The Center feels very strongly that the process of obtaining this level of care should not be the burden of the family during one of their greatest times of need. Thus, the Center provides the following level of care:
- Personalized Care: Being told your baby has a fetal anomaly or a potential genetic condition is one that undoubtedly results in much anxiety form the unknown. At the Center for Prenatal Pediatrics, a genetic counselor or nurse practitioner speaks directly with each patient and family at the time of referral to answer any immediate questions and review what to expect from their visit.
- Coordination of Appointments: At the Center, we believe that a fetal anomaly is best understood and treated when done in a multidisciplinary manner. Thus, the Center will coordinate appointments, including obtaining insurance authorization for the family to be seen by multiple specialists. The Center facilitates gathering of all the clinical information from referring providers and distributing it to the multidisciplinary team; serving as a centralized information hub.
- Weekly Case Conference: Central to the care provided by the Center is the weekly multidisciplinary conference where input is received from each pediatric and obstetric specialist. The conference is a collaboration of minds to provide the most comprehensive information and treatment to patients.
- A Familiar Face: The staff at the Center continues to be a familiar face for the family throughout the prenatal and into the neonatal period. We remain available to answer any questions regarding your care here and will be happy to direct you to additional resources.
- Research: Current research and data are integral to the information provided by the Center. One of the goals of the Center is to provide outcomes data to our families by maintaining a clinical database.
The Center for Prenatal Pediatrics exemplifies family and patient-centered care. Translating science into clinical practice for optimal outcomes has and will continue to be the Center's goals.
