Trauma
William Middlesworth, MD
Director, Regional Pediatric Trauma ProgramTrauma--accidental injury--kills more children than all other diseases combined. And when every second counts following a severe injury, it is critical to get the child to a trauma center equipped to care for such injuries. The Pediatric Trauma Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital offers the highest level of expertise in trauma management, with dedicated trauma specialists who are available 24 hours a day to handle the most complex and life-threatening injuries.
One of only three designated Level 1 Regional Pediatric Trauma Centers in New York State, our Trauma Program provides rapid diagnosis and treatment for children--from infants to the age of 17--who have suffered blunt traumatic and other types of serious injuries. Time is of the essence after a traumatic injury, and when patients arrive through our Emergency Department or after transfer from another hospital via special transport service, our trauma team moves swiftly to stabilize, diagnose and provide immediate treatment.
Many trauma injuries in children result from being struck by an automobile or falling from open windows. Because traumatically injured children frequently experience multiple injuries in need of very specialized care, trauma care requires a multidisciplinary team approach-specialists working together to quickly assess the extent of injuries in order to provide appropriate treatment that helps ensure the best outcomes for our patients. Our team includes experts in emergency medicine, trauma surgery, neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery, pediatric anesthesia and radiology, as well as a pediatric intensive care nurse and a pediatric trauma nurse coordinator, who ensures that all aspects of care are addressed.
Creating safer environments is key to reducing the risk of unintentional injury. Our Trauma Program is a leader in trauma education and injury prevention. From distributing car seats to rebuilding local playgrounds, our efforts to prevent injury are extensive. Through health fairs and training sessions, we also work to educate people in our community and across the nation about injury prevention. We've partnered with the New York City Department of Transportation, the Injury Free Coalition for Kids and the American Trauma Society in order to raise awareness and educate families.
From trauma prevention to providing the highest level of acute care, the Trauma Program of Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is dedicated to the health and well being of children.
