Meyer Kattan, MD
Director, Division of Pulmonology
The Division of Pulmonology at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital has a long and distinguished history in the diagnosis and treatment of children with respiratory problems. In 1938, Dr. Dorothy Andersen, a pathologist at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, published the first clinical description of cystic fibrosis. In the 1970s, Dr. Robert Mellins, a noted pediatric pulmonologist, established one of the first pediatric pulmonary programs. Today, the Sarah E. Nash Lung Center and the Sue and John L. Weinberg Cystic Fibrosis Center together form a comprehensive center to manage the full range of acute and chronic respiratory diseases in infants, children, and adolescents.
Our Division provides a wide variety of specialized tests to diagnose respiratory disorders and uses the findings to customize the most effective plan of care for your child.
- Our staff is experienced in examining the smaller airways of infants and children of any age using flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy. This test is performed on an outpatient basis with members of the Department of Anesthesiology under the safest conditions, allowing your child to breathe spontaneously while improving the diagnostic accuracy of the procedure.
- NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is one of the few centers in the New York metropolitan area able to measure and monitor lung function in children of any age, including infants (using special equipment for those tiny patients).
- The Exercise Physiology Laboratory, among the few in the northeast dedicated to children and adolescents, is capable of non-invasively measuring heart and lung function during exercise.
- The Pediatric Sleep Disorders Center offers evaluation and management of the full range of sleep disorders. In a sleep laboratory centered on children and adolescents, sleep studies are performed in a friendly, caring manner by experienced sleep technicians capable of conducting technically challenging studies.
- The Neuromuscular Disease Clinic provides care for children with respiratory problems associated with muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases.
