Pediatric Epilepsy Center

Cigdem I. Akman, MD
Director, Pediatric Epilepsy Center

Welcome to the Pediatric Epilepsy Center at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. The goal of our Center is to provide your child with personalizeed, state-of-the-art, comprehensive epilepsy care in order to promote health and well-being.

Our patients benefit from the intervention of an experienced multidisciplinary team that includes pediatric epileptologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, EEG technologists, and a dedicated nurse practitioner, as well as psychologists and psychiatrists.

Epilepsy, which is a disruption in the brain's electrical impulses, is characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. Through our team approach, the Center ensures that patients have access to definitive diagnostic testing, receive appropriate medical attention, are offered information on alternative treatments that can control their seizures, and ample opportunity for discussion with a team of epilepsy specialists who can help parents and patients with the decision-making process about treatment.

The Pediatric Epilepsy Center offers:

  • Definitive diagnosis of your child's epilepsy syndrome using the latest diagnostic EEG technology
  • Use of other diagnostic services in order to guide treatment, including genetic testing and MRI, PET and SPECT scans
  • Application of evidenced-based medical treatment appropriate for your child's epilepsy syndrome
  • Application of new and novel treatments when traditional treatments fail
  • Evaluation for possible surgical treatment when medical treatment fails to provide freedom from seizures
  • Referral and collaboration with other disciplines in order to coordinate the care of even the most complex patients
