Pain Medicine
William S. Schechter, MS, MD, FAAP
Director, Division of Pain Medicine Program"Is it going to hurt?" That's one of the most common questions children ask their parents and doctors when they learn they have to go to the hospital. At NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, our pain medicine specialists do everything they can, using the latest techniques, to ease the pain and discomfort of children with acute and chronic illnesses.
Our Pediatric Pain Medicine Program was the first dedicated pediatric pain management center to be established in New York City. The program provides highly specialized pain treatment and management of symptoms for children of all ages, from birth through adolescence. We provide diagnostic and treatment services for inpatients and outpatients using a compassionate and holistic, family-centered approach.
The team works together to relieve pain and symptoms in children who have had surgery and in those with illnesses such as:
- Cancer
- Sickle cell disease
- HIV/AIDS
- A wide variety of neurological, digestive, and autoimmune disorders such as headache and mouth/facial pain, complex regional pain syndrome, chronic abdominal pain, and arthritis
- Rare genetic and metabolic disorders
In addition, we address other distressing symptoms associated with many illnesses and their treatments, such as nausea, vomiting, itching, constipation, sleeplessness, anxiety, and depression. Our specialists also teach medical and nursing students, resident physicians, nurses, senior physicians, and surgeons the essential elements of pediatric pain and symptom management.
