Philosophy of Care

The philosophy of care for the Department of Nursing is based on the belief that each person and family is unique with special needs and characteristics. When one member of a family is affected by a change or illness, the entire family is affected. Involving the entire family in the child's care plan helps to achieve the most positive health outcomes. Our goal is to keep families educated during the Hospital stay so that they can make informed decisions about their child's treatment. Our care team is dedicated to partnering with patients and their families to achieve optimal outcomes.

About the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Unit

5 Tower is a 25-bed unit primarily devoted to the care of children with cancer and hematological disorders and their families. The unit has 15 single-bedded rooms, three two-bedded rooms, and one four-bedded room. Several rooms are designed for children undergoing marrow, stem, or cord blood transplantation. Located on the 5th floor of the Tower, the unit cares for patients ranging from newborns to 18 years old.

The rooms contain a sofa that converts to a bed so a parent may stay overnight. Single-bedded rooms include a desk with computer access and Internet service. A family lounge nearby has a microwave, television, and shower facilities. Two additional family alcoves near the patient rooms provide snacks and drinks.

Doctors, nurse practitioners and nurses work hand in hand with child life, social work, psychology and discharge planning to create an environment that is conducive to healing and promoting the normal growth and development of the child. Families are encouraged to participate in their child's care and are included in daily rounds and planning their child's care. Emotional and spiritual care is fully integrated into the care provided.

Nursing Staff

The unit is supervised by a Patient Care Director. Unit staff working under the guidance of the Patient Care Director include registered nurses, nurse attendants and unit assistants, and other support staff.

Patient Care

Nursing care is delivered by registered nurses with expertise in the care of pediatric patients. Upon admission to the unit, your child will be assessed by a registered nurse. In addition to performing clinical evaluations, delivering comprehensive care, and providing emotional support, our nursing staff are skilled in safety management, pain management, skin care, and infection control.

Other members of the care team include cardiologists, pediatric subspecialists, social worker, respiratory therapists, a feeding specialist, and nutritionists.
