Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism
Sharon E. Oberfield, MD
Director, Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism
Endocrine disorders cause significant medical and physical problems during childhood and adolescence that may have lifelong health and psychological consequences. NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital provides diagnosis and the most advanced therapies, as well as consultation, for children and adolescents with endocrine or metabolic diseases. The Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center focuses on both the prevention and treatment of diabetes. This is particularly important because the number of children developing diabetes is growing steadily.
The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is a city-wide, regional, national and international referral site for children with
- disorders of growth and pubertal development;
- obesity, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes;
- neuroendocrine dysfunction;
- metabolic bone disease and abnormalities of body composition;
- adrenal disorders;
- endocrine problems related to pediatric cancer and its treatment.
The Division has approximately 6,000 patient visits each year. We are also a designated New York State Newborn Screening Referral Center for thyroid disorders and congenital hyperplasia. Patients are offered state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment options in our Endocrine, Diabetes and POWER (Program for Overweight Education and Reduction) clinics and specialty practices. The Hospital's outpatient Pediatric Endocrine Testing Unit provides diagnostic testing in a child-friendly atmosphere.
The Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center at Columbia University Medical Center is one of three Diabetes Centers of Excellence in New York State and has been cited by the American Diabetes Association for its quality care. Guided by the motto, "the care until the cure," the Center offers unique multidisciplinary family-centered services, including home and school visits, an insulin pump program, and education programs for grandparents and other caregivers. An annual Summer Fun Program introduces children with diabetes to the landmarks of New York City and provides an opportunity to teach them that life with diabetes can be fulfilling, active and enjoyable.
