Anesthesiology

Lena S.Y. Sun, MD
Director, Division of Anesthesiology

Children require special care when it comes to anesthesia and pain management. The pediatric anesthesiologists at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital are specifically trained in the subspecialty, and many are board-certified in anesthesiology and pediatrics, as well as critical care and pain management. Our faculty of 18 anesthesiologists care for patients having elective surgery, emergency surgery, and anesthesia or sedation required for imaging (MRI and CT scans), interventional radiology and cardiology procedures, as well as those needing postoperative and chronic pain control. Available on-site and around the clock, our pediatric anesthesiologists are integral members of the health care team, combining their extensive knowledge and experience in pediatric medical and surgical issues with the special ability to relate to children, assess their needs and minimize their anxiety.

Children react to medications very differently from adults, and for this and other reasons, anesthesia must be tailored to the pediatric population for safe and successful surgery.

Our team works to ensure that anesthesia is administered in the safest manner possible using advanced technologies to carefully monitor our young patients during the operation or procedure, as well as throughout the recovery period. Anesthesiologists also provide sedation outside of the operating room for off-site procedures, such as interventional radiology and cardiac catheterization. In addition, our pain medicine program has been at the forefront of providing non-operating room analgesia and sedation for diagnostic examinations, including MRIs, CT scans, and fluoroscopy.

Providing nearly 9,000 anesthetics last year for surgical, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures, our division offers a child-friendly environment that enables parents to often be present for anesthetizing which helps to ease their child's anxiety. In all cases, our dedicated team approach allows us to provide individual attention to our young patients--from birth to age 20--and their families, who are very much involved in their child's treatment plan and program.
