Healthy Lifestyle Programs

NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is committed to providing programs for the community that promote healthy lifestyles for our children. These programs include:

CHALK
The goals of CHALK are to reduce over time the prevalence of childhood obesity in Northern Manhattan (with a focus on school-aged children), and to promote a culture and create an environment in which healthy lifestyles are integral to the lives of all children. CHALK

Healthy Schools Healthy Families
This school-based collaboration was designed to partner health professionals with school staff and community organizations to assess the needs of children and families and to mobilize resources to address those needs. Today, the program serves some 5,000 children in seven elementary schools (kindergarten through fifth grade) in Washington Heights, West Harlem and East Harlem. Healthy Schools Healthy Families seeks to cultivate healthy lifestyle behaviors, including physical fitness, good nutrition, and regular doctor visits among school children and their families. In addition, the program is helping to improve the health of children by facilitating access to preventive, primary and specialty care, health insurance and social services.

The POWER Project Program
Obesity among teenagers has increased dramatically in the last several decades. In September 2001, the Hospital created the Adolescent POWER (Program for Overweight Education and Reduction) Project to expand treatment options available for overweight teens in the community. The Project provides adolescents with initial medical, psychosocial and nutrition evaluations and the option to participate in either a group or individual treatment program. The program involves meetings with a nutritionist, an adolescent medicine provider, and an endocrinologist/obesity specialist. POWER Project

The Center for Adolescent Bariatric Surgery
The Center for Adolescent Bariatric Surgery at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary weight management program that includes health and metabolic screening; nutritional guidance, dietary management, and education; individualized exercise programs; laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding; and ongoing follow-up.
