School Based Mental Health Programs
The School-Based Mental Health Programs are subclinics of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Service at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. They provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment to children (ages 4-13, grades pre-K thru 8) and families on site at 15 public elementary schools in Washington Heights and Harlem.
Children are referred by school staff and parents, and present with a range of disruptive behavior, mood and anxiety disorders. Services are provided by on site child clinicians, including psychologists, social workers, and child psychiatrists who rotate among the sites.
Services are available in English and Spanish, and include:
- evaluation
- evidence-based individual and group psychotherapies
- psychopharmacology
- parent education
- parent-child and family therapies
- crisis intervention
- case management
- consultation
- prevention
- outreach
Program staff collaborate actively with parents and school staff to implement classroom- and school-level interventions to facilitate the children's educational and social development, and reduce the need for placement of children in separate special education settings.
The program provides psychoeducation and prevention services at additional elementary, middle, and high schools. The program is an active training site for psychology, psychiatry and social work.
