David Roye, Jr., MD Honored with "Inspiration Award"

(Nov 24, 2009)

David P. Roye, Jr., MD, Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, was recently presented with a When U Dream A Dream Foundation "Inspiration Award" by his former patient, Kip Guja, and the Foundation's president, Lawrence Pleskow.

Kip Guja, formerly of Babylon, New York, and now a second-year medical student at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, credits Dr. Roye for inspiring him to attend medical school. When Kip was born with cerebral palsy, his doctors predicted he would never learn to walk or ever attend a mainstream school, and would have multiple disabilities his entire life. But Kip's parents did not accept those predictions and were determined that he would live a full life and attend regular schools. Along the way Kip met Dr. Roye.

"He was very different from the other doctors," Kip recalls. "He had this amazing positive attitude and was determined to help me walk and live a normal life." Kip is enrolled in a combined MD/PhD program and looks to specialize in pediatric orthopaedics. "I hope to one day have a positive impact on my patients, as Dr. Roye had on me."

When U Dream A Dream Foundation annually presents an award to an outstanding physician in the country. After Lawrence Pleskow heard Kip's story, it was clear to him that Dr. Roye would be this year's winner. Located in Beverly Hills, California, the Foundation's mission is to provide education and inspiration to physically challenged individuals from around the world.
