Orthopaedic Surgery

Risa

Risa was born to be a little person. Her rare genetic condition, Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia Congenita (SEDC), affects her growth plates and causes orthopaedic difficulties with her knees, hips and spine, resulting in reduced stature or dwarfism. After receiving her diagnosis, Risa's parents decided to act quickly to seek a medical team with experience treating SEDC, and found David P. Roye, Jr. MD.

Dr. Roye took great interest in Risa's condition focusing on treatment that would allow Risa to function as normally as possible. At age 16, Risa already had 15 surgeries. But Risa also played and coached baseball, swam competitively, and competed in several large sporting events, including the Irish Games, where she won a gold medal. Risa has acted in films, earned high honors, enjoyed her senior prom, is headed off to college, and shares her big smile with everyone.
