Michael A. Weiner, MD
Director, Herbert Irving Division of Child & Adolescent OncologyThe Herbert Irving Division of Child & Adolescent Oncology is one of the largest and most distinguished pediatric oncology programs in the United States, serving as a referral center for patients across the country and abroad. The Division's physicians, nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, research nurses, and basic scientists provide the expertise required to successfully diagnose and treat children afflicted with cancer and to perform the research that one day may help prevent and eradicate these devastating diseases.
Our physicians represent a broad range of expertise in pediatric cancers and are nationally recognized for their work in leukemia and lymphoma, solid tumors, and neuro-oncology. They chair scientific conferences, frequently publish the results of their clinical and basic science research, and are among the most highly respected clinician researchers in their specialties. Our affiliation with the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center of NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, a designated comprehensive cancer center of the National Cancer Institute, allows us to call on their extensive scientific and clinical resources to benefit our young patients.
As a charter member of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), the nation's largest consortium of medical centers for the study of childhood cancer therapy, NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is able to offer our patients access to innovative therapeutics, including the latest chemotherapy and/or radiation oncology regimens, blood, bone marrow and stem cell transplant treatments, immunotherapies, anti-angiogenic drugs, as well as complementary therapies. The Hospital is one of only 20 institutions in the country designated by the National Cancer Institute through COG to conduct Phase 1 pediatric clinical trials, enabling pediatric patients to take part in potentially breakthrough therapies.
We take pride in the exceptional level of attention that children with cancer receive through the Herbert Irving Division of Child & Adolescent Oncology. Combining superior medical expertise with equally compassionate care, we bring help and hope to children with cancer and their families each and every day.
A Comforting Environment
We understand that a child's healthcare environment is important to the healing process. The Herbert Irving Child & Adolescent Oncology Center at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is a spacious facility designed to foster patient and family-centered care. Bold colors and decor inspired by nature create a soothing environment. Chemotherapy treatment areas are equipped with individual TVs and Internet connections. A family room provides comfortable space for patients and families to have some quiet time.
In 2007, the Division will open a new non-medical haven for adolescents called the Lion's Den. With the support of Christie Mack, wife of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Board Chairman John Mack, the Lion's Den will be equipped with state-of-the-art technology from Microsoft and Cisco Systems and allows hospitalized teens to enjoy activities, such as Internet access and video games. Patients will receive a "smart" card when they are admitted to the Hospital, identifying them as members of a special community with unique privileges to the Lion's Den.Contact
