Patient Rights
As a patient in a New York State hospital, your child has certain rights and protections guaranteed by state, federal laws and regulatory agencies. These exist to help ensure the quality and safety of hospital care. To help you understand these rights, the New York State Department of Health and its Consumer Health Information Council published a booklet Your Rights as a Hospital Patient in New York State, which is given to you at the time of admission.
The Patient Services Department ensures staff awareness and respect for Patients' Rights. The New York State Department of Health requires that every hospital in New York State post and distribute the Patient's Bill of Rights. If you did not receive a copy, please ask your nurse or contact the Admitting Office. If you have questions about the Patient's Bill of Rights, contact the Patient Services Department at (212) 305-5904.
Patient Privacy
The Hospital is committed to protecting the privacy of patients in its care in accordance with the privacy regulations set forth by the New York State Department of Health, Joint Commission, and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which was established April 2003 to provides new rights for individuals with respect to protected health information and mandates health care providers and health plans to comply. You will receive a copy of these guidelines.
Advance Directives
Advance Directives include but are not limited to a healthcare proxy, a living will, and a DNR order. They allow patients and their families to state their preference for medical treatment, as well as legally designate an agent or person to make health care decisions if the patient is unable or chooses to have someone else make their health care decisions for them. If you would like more information or would like to request an Advance Directive form, please contact the Patient Services Department at (212) 305-5904.
