Blood Donation
NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital relies largely on carefully screened, voluntary blood donors to maintain its blood supplies, the safety of which is ensured by extensive testing. Please check with your child's doctor about criteria, whether your child is likely to need blood, and the time frame for donating.
Autologous Blood DonationWhenever possible, autologous blood donation or donation of blood by the patient is encouraged. In this way, the patient is given his or her own blood if a transfusion is needed. A $135 fee is charged for processing, testing, and handling autologous blood.
Directed Blood DonationAutologous blood transfusions are not possible in small children. Instead, parents or a close friend that has been chosen by the patient's family whose blood type is compatible with your child's may donate blood for the child's use. This is called a directed blood donation. It is recommended that families donate in a particular person's name versus directed donation, because if directed blood is not needed, it is wasted. There is no additional fee for directed donations.
The following are requirements for donating blood:
- 17 years of age
- in good health
- weigh at least 110 pounds
- pass the physical and health history examination given prior to donation

The New York Blood Center has donor centers throughout New York City, New York and New Jersey, allowing friends and family to donate closer to home. The donor center will provide all the information needed to set up an appointment Because directed blood donates require special handling, the donor center charges a fee for each unit drawn and requires a physician's order/prescription.

Organ Donation
Organ donation is a very personal issue, one that can make the difference between life and death for other patients. The Hospital encourages parents (and, if appropriate, their children) to discuss this issue. For further information on organ donation, please call the New York Organ Donor Network.
The New York State Department of Health administers the New York State Organ and Tissue Donor Registry, a confidential database. If would like a brochure that includes an enrollment form, call the New York Organ Donor Network.>
