Admission and Discharge
Admission and discharge procedures vary slightly between the two main medical centers of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Please discuss with your doctor any special steps that you must take before admission.
Admission
When to Arrive at the Hospital
- NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/
Columbia University Medical Center - A nurse will call you the night before to tell you when should arrive at the hospital and where you should go when you get there.
- NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/
Weill Cornell Medical Center - The night before your admission, you will call a number that was given to you by either your physician or during pre-admission testing. You will be told when to arrive and where to go. On the day of surgery you will go directly to your assigned surgery unit. The admitting process will occur at that time.
In some cases, a member of the Admitting staff will call you on the morning (in some cases, the call will be later) to let you know exactly what time you should arrive - unless your doctor already gave you that information.
Admission Locations
- NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia
- The admitting office is located on the first floor of the Milstein Building (177 Fort Washington Avenue at 168th Street).
- NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell
- The admitting lobby is in Payson 101, off the main lobby (525 East 68th Street - between York Avenue and the FDR Drive).
You will go to the admitting office in the lobby of the hospital. It is important that you arrive on time.
About Health Insurance
A member of the Admitting staff will go over your insurance before or at the time of admissions. On or before admission, you will be asked to pay in full for estimated charges not covered by your insurance. The hospital accepts cash and major credit cards for payment.

Discharge
When your physician tells you that you are ready to go home, the nurses will discuss ongoing care with you. If any prescriptions are required, they will be given to you on the night before discharge. You have the right to receive a written discharge plan that describes the arrangements for any future healthcare that you may need after discharge. You may not be discharged until the services required in your written discharge plan are secured or determined by the hospital to be reasonably available. You also have the right to appeal this discharge plan.
Discharge Day Discharge time is 10:00 a.m.
