Our Expertise

The Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders in children, including:

  • vision problems
  • strabismus (misalignment of the eyes)
  • nystagmus (an involuntary eye movement that usually results in some degree of visual loss)
  • tumors
  • corneal and lens disorders
  • eye muscle abnormalities
  • tearing and infections
  • retinal diseases
  • refractive errors, nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism
  • amblyopia (reduced vision in an eye that has not received adequate use during early childhood, often referred to as "lazy eye")

We also treat children with more uncommon eye conditions including:

  • pediatric cataracts
  • pediatric glaucoma
  • droopy eyelids
  • eye and vision disorders linked to genetic diseases and problems with metabolism, the nervous system and the immune system
  • retinopathy of prematurity (a potentially blinding eye disorder that primarily affects premature infants)

Diagnosis and Treatment

Our pediatric ophthalmologists provide examination, diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of ocular, eye movement and vision system disorders in neonates, infants, children and adolescents. Our pediatric ophthalmologists also work closely with physicians in a range of specialties, including genetics, orthopaedics and rheumatology as needed or requested.

The Division of Pediatric Ophthalmology offers special testing not routinely available for children elsewhere, including vision testing for pre-verbal children, orthoptic evaluation and treatment, and pediatric visual field testing.

Our physicians use electrophysiological testing for retinal disease and employ sophisticated microsurgical technology for retinal, corneal and plastic surgery, including corneal transplants and cataract extractions of the eyes.

Specialists in Retinal Diseases

Our experienced retinal surgeons often perform 'bedside' laser surgery on premature infants that does not require general anesthesia. Our physicians are also skilled in performing intraocular surgery on premature infants with severe retinopathy of prematurity. In this procedure, the retinal surgeon removes blood and scar tissue from inside the eye in order to reattach the retina. This is done under general anesthesia and requires the skills of our expert pediatric anesthesiologists for these infants who are generally medically unstable. Babies are then cared for in the Hospital's state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. We also treat children with retinal detachments, eye perforations and other diseases of the retina.
