Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Our Expertise
Excellence in Nursing Care
Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurses are experienced and exceptionally well trained. Not only do they care for the tiniest of infants, but they also provide care, support, and education to the infants' parents as well. NICU nurses require highly specialized skills in the assessment and care of neonates and sick infants and are trained in a wide range of medical, technological, and surgical interventions. The NICU nursing teams are also geographically grouped throughout the unit to provide care for infants and their families. This model supports teamwork, communication, and continuity of care.
Excellence in Respiratory Care
Our NICU has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health for excellence in the treatment of respiratory disorders and, in particular, for its extremely low incidence of chronic lung disease.
We were among the first centers in the country to offer extracorporeal membrane oxygenator (ECMO) therapy for infants with severe respiratory failure unresponsive to conventional therapies, and today, we are one of only three facilities in the tri-state area to offer ECMO. ECMO is a technique that uses an artificial heart and lung device that supports oxygenation until a baby's lungs can function on his or her own. We have particular expertise in treating newborns with congenital diaphragmatic hernia using a protocol we designed that allows gentle support of the fragile lungs of these babies. In addition, we manage respiratory complications with ventilators and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) methods to assist infants who cannot maintain adequate oxygen levels.
Neurological Advances
Our physicians apply the latest neurological advances, such as electroencephalography (EEG) methods to access brain function, and head cooling caps, which lower the baby's head and body temperature to help lessen the risk of a neurological disability.
Nutritional Care
Our staff has made major contributions to the field of neonatal nutrition. Our neonatal nutritionist is an integral member of the healthcare team, providing recommendations to optimize the nutritional care of the critically ill newborn.
