Clinical Practice
As the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner for the Center for Adolescent Bariatric Surgery, Mary Ann Witt, DNSc, CPNP provides office consultations to determine eligibility for laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding surgery (LAGB) and study enrollment; diet, exercise and cognitive behavioral counseling on a monthly basis before LAGB; and the post-operative care and management (including band adjustments and evaluate the safety and efficacy of LAGB)in accordance with the Center's IRB approved protocol.
Ms. Witt initiates clinical referrals to diagnose and manage medical and psychiatric comorbidities, including diabetes, metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovarian syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea, HTN, hypercholesteremia, pseudotumor cerebri, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and asthma; obtains and interprets the cardiopulmonary exercise data for all patients pre-LAGB and post-surgery; provides individualized exercise prescriptions based on cardiopulmonary exercise testing; and monitors adherence to exercise training and counseling on a monthly basis.
Research RoleA PhD in clinical research (DNSc) earned in May 2007 has enabled Dr. Witt to develop the surgical research database with Dr. Fisher; organize and submit reports to the FDA; train and oversee pre-medical students in data entry and management; conduct data analysis; interpret research data and disseminate the Center's study outcomes. Dr. Witt has presented several published abstracts at the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, and has submitted the 12 month prospective study, Cardiopulmonary ExerciseTesing in Severely Obese Adolescents Who Underwent Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAGB) and Exercise Counseling for the Clinical and Translational Research Pilot Grant Award at the Irving Institute at Columbia University Medical Center. The study will examine changes in peak oxygen consumption) and body composition with weight loss and exercise counseling in adolescents 12 months post-laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding.
As the Center's Coordinator, Dr. Witt organizes the CABS multidisciplinary team (departments of endocrine, psychiatry, nutrition/GI, pulmonary, exercise physiology, anesthesiology); maintains the comprehensive approach to the care and management of severe obesity in accordance w/ the CU IRB and FDA approved study protocol; and provides the Program clinical research development.
