Lang Youth Medical Program

The Lang Youth Medical Program is a six-year science education and mentoring program for middle school students that puts the Hospital's educational resources to work for young people in Washington Heights. We provide experiences and an environment that support and improve the social, personal and academic development of the Lang Scholars during their six-year enrollment, while at the same time creating new connections between the Hospital and community through the young people in the program. The program employs a five-point strategy: (1) culture of peer support; (2) challenging six-year, longitudinal curriculum that puts the Hospital's educational resources to work for the Lang Scholars; (3) caring, consistent relationships with role models; (4) leadership opportunities; and (5) financial incentives, including internships and tuition assistance for higher education.

The mission of the Lang Youth Medical Program is to inspire, support and motivate young people representative of the neighborhood surrounding Washington Heights to realize their college and career aspirations, especially in the health sciences.

The program's objectives are:

  • To develop in the students a science background that serves them individually, culturally, and economically
  • To foster students' self-esteem and ambitions
  • To assist students to achieve their intellectual potential
  • To inspire the development and pursuit of career and life goals, particularly in medicine, health care and the sciences
  • To create meaningful mentoring relationships with medical students, residents, faculty, staff and administrators
  • To help students develop the habits of good citizenship, an appreciation of the meaning of sustained commitment and responsibility, and an understanding of the community issues to which the Hospital relates
  • To expand upon existing and develop new links between the Hospital and surrounding community, including outreach to families and schools, through which students can share their medical center experiences, and
  • To encourage replication by other hospitals across the country

Each year 12 to 16 middle school students who show academic promise and mature behavior are selected to participate in the program. Students are drawn from public middle schools in Washington Heights/Inwood. Classes are led by a combination of health professionals, educators, medical students and college students.

Students attend the program every Saturday during the school year and for four weeks during the summer. Classes are held at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in classrooms, labs, conference rooms, and in various clinical settings in the Hospital.
