Intestinal Adaptation
Clinical Research
We are interested in clinical aspects of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disease in children. Specifically, we study the outcomes of intensive intestinal rehabilitation in children with short gut syndrome as well as the indications and results of intestinal lengthening procedures. We have compiled a 25-year experience with the Kasai procedure for biliary atresia and these results are analyzed periodically. We also have begun a comprehensive review of our experience with choledochal cyst at Columbia University.
In the laboratory, our main focus is to further our understanding regarding the response of the intestine to trauma and stress. Specific ongoing projects study the neural control of intestinal adaptation after massive intestinal resection in the mouse. In addition, we are interested in the response of the intestine to chemotherapeutic drugs and to ischemia reperfusion injury.
