Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is characterized by uncontrolled, chronic inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract which can lead to symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and blood in the stool. IBD is typically divided into two major types: Crohn's disease which can affect any area of the gastrointestinal tract and Ulcerative Colitis which is confined to the colon.

Patients are diagnosed with IBD based on clinical findings as well as endoscopic, pathologic, radiographic and laboratory tests. Unfortunately, IBD is often diagnosed in the pediatric age range, but with significant advancements in the field can be effectively treated using medical interventions.

Our pediatric gastroenterologists are well trained to manage IBD utilizing the most up to date diagnostic and treatment modalities. In cases in which surgical intervention is warranted, our team works closely with the surgical staff of Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital to formulate the most effective and safest intervention. With the support of the excellent services provided by pathology, radiology, and surgery, our IBD program offers comprehensive care in the management of IBD. Our group is also a member of a national Pediatric IBD Consortium, allowing our patients to enroll in observational and treatment studies for the improvement of care for all children with IBD.
