Hydronephrosis
Unilateral (one-sided) hydronephrosis is a dilation or swelling of the kidney where urine collects-usually when there is an obstruction of urine flow somewhere along the urinary tract, most often in the upper section.
Working closely with parents and maternal/fetal medicine physicians who perform prenatal ultrasounds, the physicians in the Division of Pediatric Urology at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is able to diagnose the hydronephrosis and plan a course of treatment. By measuring the size of the kidney, the gestation and sex of the baby, and considering the family history, we advise the parents and the obstetrician as to the correct course or treatment. Under rare circumstances, the kidney may need to be drained via a tube before the baby is born. In most cases, however, we guide the mother and her obstetrician through the remaining months of pregnancy and through the delivery process.
In all cases of hydronephrosis, 40 percent generally resolve after delivery, and 20 percent will gradually resolve by one year. Our physicians guide the postnatal care and advise the child's pediatrician on appropriate follow-up care.
