Ultrasound-guided Needle Localization
Physicians at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center developed this new surgical technique that prevents the unnecessary removal of testes for some men with testicular tumors, ultimately preserving their fertility. Using this technique, hidden testicular tumors can be correctly identified and safely removed. In fact, half of all hidden tumors are benign. Therefore, as many as half of men diagnosed with impalpable testis tumors may have a testis removed unnecessarily. Ultrasound guided needle localization is an outpatient procedure requiring general or regional anesthesia. The procedure involves the precise insertion of a surgical needle into the testicle with the aid of ultrasound visualization and an operative microscope. Patients are able to return to work in three days.

Gene Silencing
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center urologists are examining the role of gene silencing in chemotherapy-resistant testicular cancer patients. Gene silencing occurs when a gene is visible in a sequence, yet does not function. Doctors posit that this phenomenon in some testicular cancer patients adversely affects the results of chemotherapy treatments.
