Eosinophilic and Allergic Gastrointestinal Disease
Allergy mediated gastrointestinal diseases can cause symptoms such as vomiting, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, diarrhea and blood in the stool depending on what area of the gastrointestinal tract is affected. Patients with allergy mediated gastrointestinal disease often have other allergic diseases such as eczema or asthma. Our team of gastroenterologists is extremely experienced managing patients with these diseases and works closely with members of our Pediatric Allergy division to formulate effective therapies.
Since dietary restrictions are often necessary for management, treatment often requires the involvement of our nutrition staff to insure good nutrition and proper growth. One of the most common allergy mediated diseases is known as milk protein allergy and typically affects infants after the first few weeks of life. In this disease the colon becomes inflamed resulting in abdominal discomfort and loose often bloody stools. Milk protein allergy usually resolves with dietary adjustments and with time.
Another not uncommon allergic disease affects the esophagus and is called eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). In this disease the esophagus becomes inflamed and swollen in response to certain allergens in food or in the air. Symptoms of EoE include vomiting, difficulty swallowing and abdominal pain. Diagnosis can only be made endoscopically and therapy can involve both medicines and/or dietary adjustments. Our faculty follows a large number of patients with EoE and other allergy mediated gastrointestinal diseases.
