F. Meridith Sonnett, MD
Director, Division of Pediatric Emergency MedicineNewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital
Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics
Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons
The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine provides treatment to nearly 50,000 patients a year and handles nearly half of all admissions to NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. Our patients benefit from highly skilled specialty physicians who offer emergency treatment for the full range of illness and injury, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A great strength of the division is derived from our connection to an academic medical center with enormous resources to offer expert care in every sub-specialty service.
Our Emergency Department is a Level 1 Trauma Center for pediatrics and has the region's highest number of board-certified physicians in emergency medicine and pediatrics. Our staff also includes nurses and health professionals specially trained in emergency and trauma medicine and able to care for severely injured children with multi-organ system medical conditions. We also have a superb support staff of social workers, emergency room technicians, Child Life specialists, as well as foreign language interpreters.
While incorporating a child-friendly ambience, our pediatric Emergency Department provides state-of-the-art medical technology and monitoring systems to ensure rapid assessment and implementation of treatment, 17 examination bays, a reverse isolation room and a waiting area featuring toys, books and a TV/video.
Our Get Well television network facilitates communication between doctors, patients, and families, and helps to provide up-to-the-minute information about patient status and treatment options. Communication with parents is of vital importance to our staff, and families will find themselves surrounded by compassionate professionals who will keep them informed, and assist them throughout their stay.
We understand the stress that comes with a visit to an emergency department, and our physicians and health care team do all that they can to help ease the anxieties of our patients and their families, while providing exceptional medical care. In addition, the Division of Emergency Medicine is also committed to the health and well being of our community, and this is demonstrated through our many partnerships and outreach programs, such as the annual Steven Z. Miller, MD, Health Fair.
