Emergency Medicine

F. Meridith Sonnett, MD
Director, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine
NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital
Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics
Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons

The Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine provides treatment to nearly 50,000 patients a year and handles nearly half of all admissions to NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. Our patients benefit from highly skilled specialty physicians who offer emergency treatment for the full range of illness and injury, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A great strength of the division is derived from our connection to an academic medical center with enormous resources to offer expert care in every sub-specialty service.

Our newly opened Alexandra & Steven Cohen Children's Emergency Department is one of only three Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Centers in New York State and has the region's highest number of board-certified physicians in emergency medicine and pediatrics. Our staff also includes nurses and health professionals specially trained in emergency and trauma medicine and able to care for severely injured children with multi-organ system medical conditions. We also have a superb support staff of social workers, emergency room technicians, Child Life Specialists, as well as foreign language interpreters.

While incorporating a child-friendly ambience, the 25,000-square-foot Cohen Children's Emergency Department provides:

  • Self-registration kiosks
  • Fast Track area to speed treatment for less urgent conditions
  • 26 private treatment areas with TV programming, videos, and games
  • Two trauma rooms with advanced technology and surgical capability
  • Four private triage rooms
  • Specialized treatment rooms for asthma, gynecology, and invasive procedures
  • On-site diagnostic services, including radiology and laboratory, eliminating the need for patient transport to other locations in the Hospital
  • Full-service pharmacy

Our Get Well television network facilitates communication between doctors, patients, and families, and helps to provide up-to-the-minute information about patient status and treatment options. Communication with parents is of vital importance to our staff, and families will find themselves surrounded by compassionate professionals who will keep them informed, and assist them throughout their stay.

We understand the stress that comes with a visit to an emergency department, and our physicians and health care team do all that they can to help ease the anxieties of our patients and their families, while providing exceptional medical care. In addition, the Division of Emergency Medicine is also committed to the health and well being of our community, and this is demonstrated through our many partnerships and outreach programs, such as the annual Steven Z. Miller, MD, Health Fair.

Other areas of focus of which we are quite proud include:

  • Disaster Preparedness Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital has made disaster preparedness, with a special emphasis on providing for the needs of children and families, a priority mission.
  • Child Life The Cohen Children's Emergency Department is often the first area of the Hospital where children receive medical care. Their experiences here can shape how they will cope with hospitalization or future healthcare visits. The presence of the Child Life Specialist in our ED provides much needed support for children and their families. Their expertise in reducing patient and caretaker stress is invaluable.
  • Pain Management Appropriate, adequate, timely and on-going management of pain is one of the most important priorities for insuring the pain-free environment we are committed to maintaining.
