Jeffrey A. Ascherman, MD
Chief, Plastic Surgery
Director, Craniofacial Center

Each year in the United States, thousands of infants are born with cleft lip, cleft palate, and other complex facial deformities. Trauma and facial tumors can also cause facial disfigurement in children. Without the right treatment, babies with birth defects or young children whose faces are damaged by disease or injury may grow up feeling rejected and isolated by their appearance.

Thanks to advances in treatment in recent decades, however, many of these children can now achieve a happy life. The Craniofacial Center of NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital extends these advances to our patients and conducts research to help the field continue to evolve. The Center is a leader in helping children and their families achieve a better future though a fully integrated, collaborative interdisciplinary program.

When your child has a craniofacial disfiguration, many specialists are required to provide the expert consultation and skillful care your child will need. The timing of such care is also critical to achieving the best outcome. To provide seamless care in an efficient manner, our team coordinates the specialty consultations and many steps required to manage your child's care, all in one location.

Our specialists meet and work together regularly. We create a long-term treatment plan which is personalized for your child, and is designed to help him or her achieve an active and productive life. We encourage you to participate actively in your child's care, and we provide the guidance you need to understand available treatment options.
