On Thursday, June 23rd, the Alexandra & Steven Cohen Children's Emergency Department officially opened at Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. This state-of-the-art facility, one of only three Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Centers in New York State, will transform the emergency care experience for children and their families.
With the opening of the new 25,000-square-foot Alexandra & Steven Cohen Children's Emergency Department, families will receive state-of-the-art care in a spacious, welcoming, and family-friendly environment. The Cohen Children's ED, which is expected to care for 60,000 children annually, quadruples the previous ED space.
Features of the new ED include:
- Self-registration kiosks
- Fast Track area to speed treatment for less urgent conditions
- 26 private treatment areas with TV programming, videos, and games
- Two trauma rooms with advanced technology and surgical capability
- Four private triage rooms
- Specialized treatment rooms for asthma, gynecology, and invasive procedures
- On-site diagnostic services, including radiology and laboratory, eliminating the need for patient transport to other locations in the Hospital
- Full-service pharmacy
The Cohen ED is a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center with access to the vast resources of Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. Physicians are board certified in both pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine; nursing and support staff are also specially trained and experienced in pediatric emergency medicine.
A Warm and Cheerful Environment
With abundant natural light and vibrant wall colors, the Alexandra & Steven Cohen Children's Emergency Department incorporates dream imagery and extends the Hospital's theme of Learning Through Literature in its artwork. Public areas and treatment rooms display vivid floor-to-ceiling illustrations from familiar children's literature. An area for storytelling helps to keep siblings engaged while a family member is treated.
Smaller seating nooks located close to treatment rooms with reading areas make the experience of coming to the ED as comforting as possible. Internet accessibility, a multi-media interactive wall, and game tables also help to minimize any anxiety.
