Child Neurology

James J. Riviello, Jr., MD
Chief, Division of Child Neurology

The Division of Child Neurology at NewYork-Presbyterian/ Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital has a long and distinguished history of caring for children affected by disorders of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles. We offer particular expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, rare and more common metabolic and genetic diseases, developmental disorders and neuromuscular conditions.

Although our comprehensive evaluation includes the latest testing modalities, our focus is on your child and your family. We emphasize extensive face-to-face consultations with families, who provide us with detailed information and insights regarding their child's symptoms and medical history that are not available in most medical records. We see many families whose children face difficult problems and have come to us after seeking help elsewhere.

Among our strengths are the close collaboration we have with many other disciplines, including neurosurgeons, neuroimaging specialists, child psychiatrists, geneticists, ophthalmologists and other pediatric and adult specialists. Our expertise is also bolstered by our interaction with the diagnostic, treatment, and scientific resources of the Neurological Institute of Columbia University Medical Center – an internationally renowned center for the study and treatment of neurological disorders.

Patients and families who come to us benefit from the coordinated care provided through dedicated programs for the treatment of epilepsy, autism and related disorders, chronic headache, spasticity, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, and spinal muscular atrophy. Our approach to these and other neurological disorders of children is supported by a robust laboratory and clinical research program that enables us to offer patients with the most challenging conditions the opportunity to participate in clinical trials of investigational therapies.

We also provide consultations to referring physicians, both in our region and abroad, whose patients may have a neurological component to their condition, and we work closely with pediatricians and primary care doctors in our local communities. The members of our team are dedicated to providing the highest level of care to children with neurological issues. We understand the importance of communicating with our patients families and ensure that they are involved, supported and informed throughout every step of the diagnostic and treatment process.
