Orthopaedic Surgery
Chelsea
Returning from a family vacation, Chelsea, 14, lost total sensation in her legs. She couldn't walk off the plane. Rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors were not able to handle her case, she was discharged paralyzed in a wheelchair.
They turned to David P. Roye, Jr., MD and Richard C.E. Anderson, MD, a pediatric neurosurgeon, who quickly discovered that the paraplegia was being caused by her scoliosis. After a complex 10-hour surgery, Chelsea's relief was immediate. She was walking right away, and home after four days. With physical therapy, she was back at school, making high honors, and playing basketball. Back in the game -- one month after surgery.
