Celiac Disease
Celiac disease is one of most common and probably most under diagnosed gastrointestinal diseases. It is caused by an aberrant intestinal inflammatory response to gluten containing cereals such as wheat, rye and barley. Our pediatric gastroenterology staff provides clinical care and are actively conducting research for the benefit of children and adolescents suffering from celiac disease. The Pediatric Celiac Center works closely with the adult center, which is world-renowned for its clinical service and research in the area of celiac disease.
Drs. Norelle Reilly, Amy DeFelice, and Philip Kazlow specialize in the treatment of celiac disease and are members of the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University. They work closely with a dedicated celiac nutritionist, Suzanne Simpson, to provide the most comprehensive and up to date care. Experienced dietary counseling for patients with celiac is essential because even small amounts of gluten in the diet can cause intestinal problems.
The Celiac Disease Center was established at Columbia University in 2001. Its mission: to redefine the future of celiac disease and treatment on an ongoing basis, through continuing advances in research, patient care, and physician and public education. The Center has become world-renowned for its services and programs and is one of the first medical school supported centers in the United States dedicated to the treatment and study of celiac disease.
