(Mar 3, 2010)

On Wednesday, March 24, from 5:30 to 7 pm, lyric tenor Luciano Lamonarca will perform a concert in the Wintergarden of Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. The concert, free of charge and open to patients, families and friends, is sponsored by the Puglia Center of America. Donations will support the Center for Orthopaedic Research and musculoskeletal cancer research under the direction of Francis Y. Lee, MD, PhD, Chief of Musculoskeletal Oncology.

Mr. Lamonarca's tenor voice has been proclaimed throughout the world. He has performed internationally for many worthy causes. The Italian media describes him as following in the footsteps of Pavarotti.

"Luciano Lamonarca will be performing as a gift to my patients and to the Columbia University Medical Center and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital communities. It is an honor to have Luciano perform on behalf of the orthopaedic research efforts of the Center for Orthopaedic Research," says Dr. Lee.

Musculoskeletal Cancers

Cancers of the bone and muscle account for 15 percent of all cancers in children; however, the life impact is significant as they often have a poor prognosis. Bone cancer often presents as a secondary cancer and can arise from breast, prostate, lung, kidney, melanoma and thyroid cancers. Most musculoskeletal tumors are resistant to radiation and chemotherapy.

About The Center for Orthopaedic Research

The Center for Orthopaedic Research is investigating the processes behind bone cancer treatment resistance at cellular and molecular levels. Together with his research team, Dr. Lee is hoping to raise awareness and funding for orthopaedic cancer research. He is a respected clinical-research scientist, and is one of a handful of orthopaedic surgeons nationally to have received R01 funding from the National Institutes of Health. As an orthopaedic oncology specialist, Dr. Lee is committed to the care of pediatric and adult patients with primary and metastatic bone cancer and to research that will lead to better patient outcomes.
