NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital enjoys a tradition of pioneering achievements in pediatric medicine and surgery. This leadership continues today. The following is a sampling of our many significant achievements over the years.

1887 First hospital for infants
1896 First modern pediatrics textbook (by L. Emmett Holt)
1909 First facility for premature infants
1920s Founded field of child neurology
1930s Founded field of pediatric radiology
1934 Bernard Sachs establishes a Pediatric Neurology service at the Neurological Institute of New York
1938 Developed serum therapy for Haemophilus influenzae meningitis, which saved lives before antibiotics were introduced
1938 Created first pediatric psychiatric clinics
1939 Identified the pathological characteristics of cystic fibrosis and 1940s: developed diagnostic sweat test
1941 Defined the management of glycogen storage disease
1951 Established first microchemistry laboratory
1952 Developed Apgar score for the assessment of newborns
late 1950s Performed first use of microanalysis of blood gas for serial measurements in premature infants
1959 First to describe "Shaken Baby Syndrome" as child abuse
1960s Established standards for the resuscitation of the newborn in the delivery room
1964 Sidney Carter is awarded the first Child Neurology Training Grant by the National Institutes of Health
1965 Performed first intrauterine surgery for an exchange transfusion
1970s First to use intravenous alimentation in premature infants and developed standards for this form of nutrition
1984 Performed first successful heart transplantation in a child
1984 Darryl De Vivo, Salvatore Di Mauro and colleagues describe mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS)
1988 Darryl De Vivo, Salvatore Di Mauro and colleagues link deletions of mitochondrial DNA to human disease
1991 First institution in the mid-Atlantic region to provide radio frequency ablation therapy for young patients and adolescents with intractable arrhythmias
1991 Darryl De Vivo describes glucose 1 (GLUT-1) transporter deficiency
1995 Developed Varicella (chicken pox) Vaccine licensed in the U.S.
1999 Marc Patterson and colleagues report the first successful treatment of a child with a congenital disorder of glycosylation in North America.
2000 Marc Patterson and colleagues describe dolichol phosphate mannose synthase 1 (DPM 1) deficiency (Congenital disorder of glycosylation type 1e)
2001 Darryl De Vivo, Salvatore Di Mauro and colleagues describe familial cerebellar ataxia with muscle Coenzyme Q10 deficiency
2002 Marc Patterson and colleagues begin the first study of glucosylceramide synthase inhibition in a human neurodegenerative disease (Niemann-Pick disease, type C)
