NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is pleased to announce the appointment of Joel E. Lavine, MD, PhD, as Chief of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Dr. Lavine is also on the faculty of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Lavine has devoted his career to helping children with acute and chronic liver diseases. A noted clinician-scientist, his research focuses on fatty liver disease and viral hepatitis in children.
Dr. Lavine comes to Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital from the University of California, San Diego, where he was Professor and Vice Chairman of Pediatrics, and Chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Rady Children's Hospital for 15 years. He also served as Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Program.
While at the University of California, Dr. Lavine oversaw faculty development and the pediatric fellowship programs at the University of California, and was Fellowship Director for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Prior to joining the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Lavine was a faculty member at Harvard Medical School and Director of Liver Research at The Children's Hospital, Boston from 1991 to 1995.
Dr. Lavine is a National Institutes of Health-funded principal investigator for studies related to treatment, natural history, etiopathogenesis and genetics of fatty liver disease. While at the University of California, he received a $1.3 million grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) and NICHD for a national, seven-year study on fatty liver disease in children and adults. This study is renewed for an additional $4.2 million for five more years. Dr. Lavine serves on the Executive Committee and Chairs the Steering and Pediatric Committees for the national multi-center network. He also serves as Chair of the NIDDK Data and Safety Monitoring Board for the Cholestatic Liver Disease Research and Education Network.
Dr. Lavine earned his doctorate in molecular biology in 1980 at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and his medical degree from University of California, San Diego, in 1984. He completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, in 1986, followed by a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology there, completed in 1989.
